Sci-Bono is one of our favorite spots in Johannesburg, the girls absolutely love it! If you haven’t heard of Sci-Bono, here’s a reel I made a while ago about it.
It came as no surprise when Aria asked to have a science party at Sci-Bono for her birthday this year. She loves science and Sci-Bono is absolutely one of her happy places.
We had her science party at Sci-Bono this past weekend and I cannot rave enough about it, we were all blown away!
Booking Your Party
Booking was easy peasy, you fill out a booking form and then pay the fee a week before the party.
Your fee includes:
- Use of one of the party rooms for 2 hours for 40 people
- 2-3 age-appropriate science activities and experiments
- 2-3 Sci-Bono staff to assist with the group
- Unlimited access to the centre for the full day
Venue
There are two rooms, one is Galaxy themed and one is Powerpuff girl themed.
Aria opted for the Galaxy themed one, it comes with a little kitchenette section complete with a fridge, microwave, dustbin, sink as well as some storage shelving.

The rooms have ample tables and chairs for guests and really are well themed which means you really don’t need to do a lot in terms of décor. In fact, all we did was add some star bunting but it really wasn’t necessary.
Sci-Bono Activities
If you’ve been to Sci-Bono you know that it is huge and so it’s great that your guests can have access to the full centre both before and after the party.
The Sci-Bono staff were amazing with the kids (aging from 4 years old – 10 years old), answering all their questions and assisting them where they needed to.

For our groups activities we did the following:
- Robotics and Virtual Reality: We got to meet Pepper the robot, have a robot dance party, and do a roller coaster VR experience
- Walking drawing robot: The kids each made their own robot and then got them to draw pictures. They absolutely loved this and were so thrilled that they were able to create this!
- Science show: Oh my word, I don’t know who enjoyed this more, the kids or the adults, it was fantastic! We did about 5 experiments and majority of them were interactive. Again, the staff went above and beyond explaining things to the kids and answering all of the questions.
Give this reel I just put up a watch if you’d like to see some of the experiments, they really were great!
On top of this, Sci-Bono also gave Aria a birthday present which was a little science experiment she could do at home, really amazing!
Food and Drinks
In terms of catering, the centre doesn’t do any of this and so you need to bring in all of your own food and drinks.
Because the time slots that you can choose from (10am-12pm or 2pm-4pm) don’t fall over a meal time, it’s really easy to just do snack platters.

As you know, I’m trying to not be so prescriptive when it comes to my kids parties and so I let Aria choose what she wanted for food.
- No cake, she wanted a brownie tower. My mom kindly baked these and they were so yum.
- Blue Doritos and Flings
- Mashmallows and Jelly Babies
- Carrots, mini cucumbers, mango and pineapple pieces
- Viennas and cheese on toothpicks
For drinks we did mini Oros bottles and then soda’s and still water. Everything went down a treat and we hardly had any food left which is always a good sign!
A little Extra
Of course, I couldn’t help myself and had to add in some other science themed bits and pieces.
Science Themed party packs
As always, Canva Pro was my bestie and I made an access card for each child with their photo and what kind of scientist they were.
I used a Canva template (life saver) and grabbed some different colour lanyards and plastic card holders on a recent Shein order. In that same Shein order I grabbed some science-themed stickers and badges which the kids loved!

Those three things combined, as well as some glow sticks made up the party packs which we gave out at the beginning of the party.
Science Party decor
I also added science themed stickers to the Oros bottles like I usually do, as well as make cake toppers and add science themed stickers to the paper cups, all thanks to my party bestie, Canva Pro.

All in all, it was an incredible party, everyone had an amazing time. If you’re looking to have a party that will not only entertain the kids but also have an educational aspect, Sci-Bono is it!
