How to install Wall paneling

If there’s one thing that I love doing, it’s redecorating a room… and this time, the girl’s bedroom was up. While I loved the bright and fun colours that were in the bedroom, it was looking tired and was definitely due for a refresh.

After some back and forth, we decided on doing some wall paneling (which I’ve been dying to do somewhere in the house for ages) and surprisingly it was actually really simple to do.

So many of you loved the outcome after watching this Instagram Reel that I decided that I’d do this blog post on how to install wall paneling so that you could do it in your home too!

It goes without saying that Dan did the majority (okay all) of the work here and I hung around for moral support, he did a really amazing job.

How to Panel a wall

1. Prep the Wall(s)

The first thing that needed to get done was to wipe down all the walls, pull out nails where pictures hung, poly-fill and sand, and then give it a fresh coat of white paint.

2. Measuring

This is the most important part; the measuring. These are the measurements you need to take:

Measuring your walls

– The height from the skirting board (or floor) to the height that you’d like the paneling to go. Bear in mind that there will be another wooden slat on top of that.

Also, take note of whether there are windows in certain places where you’ll need to adjust the height of the slats.

We spoke about how high we wanted the paneling to go and decided on about a third up, bearing in mind that we have high ceilings. I think those with standard height ceilings go about half way up.

– The length of the wall or walls (in total) that you’ll have the paneling on.

– The width of the wooden slats. We went for ___mm wide. And then instead of a wooden slat on top, we chose some cornicing to go on top.

Determine the spacing

Now that you have those measurements, you can work out how far apart the wooden slats need to be so that they are evenly placed on the walls.

  1. Number of wooden slats x width of wooden slats = total width of wood
  • Length of the wall (or walls total) total width of wood = total uncovered wall
  • Total uncovered wall / (number of wooden slats – 1) = space between wooden slats

3. Attaching the Slats

I’ve seen a lot of paneling DIYs using nails to secure the wooden slats to the wall, but we used No More Nails and it was so much easier and works just as well.

When you place them on the wall, just take your spirit level and make sure that they are straight.

4. Painting and Finishing Touches

Once you’ve secured all the paneling to the wall with your No More Nails, let it dry and then you can paint. We chose this gorgeous shade called Mauve It from Fired Earth and it looks gorgeous! We chose to paint the skirting boards the same shade.

All in all, with all the painting, waiting to dry in between, the project took us 3 days and it was so, so worth it.

For an extra pop of colour (because let’s be honest more is more when it comes to colour) we decided to paint the furniture in the girls bedroom too and went with this beautiful pastel green colour, Mojito from Fired Earth and the way that it pops against the indigo is just stunning, I love how it turned out way more than I thought I would.

It’s always incredible to me how just a simple coat of paint can absolutely transform a space. And so in saying that… what should we paint next?! I’m leaning towards the lounge…
