Can you believe that Father’s Day is around the corner already?! Well technically in just a little over than two weeks but you know what I’m like, I prep for things way in advance… and if you do too then you’ll love today’s post because it’s a super comprehensive Fathers Day gift guide.
I’ve tried my best to source items from mostly local companies (because man oh man do they need our support after the last couple of rough years) and also to cover a wide range of price points too. All the products are linked so you can simply “add to cart” and wait for your order to arrive on your doorstep, simple as that, yay!
Let’s jump right in because I have quite a few to get through…
Sexy Socks: What’s Father’s Day without a new pair of socks, amirite? The Sexy Socks brand was born when Dave Hutchison realised that many school children in South Africa go to school without socks, and cold toes are not conducive to learning or concentrating. In a bid to help, Dave started Sexy Socks and donates a pair of cozy socks to a South African child in need for every pair of Sexy Socks sold. They use these Sock Drops not only to warm up some toes but to also engage with the students and encourage an entrepreneurial spirit. Sexy socks (and jocks!) have so many fun designs in both cotton and bamboo. Not sure what the big deal about bamboo socks is? First off, it’s great for the environment plus it’s also antibacterial, anti-odour, hypoallergenic super soft. As Sexy Socks say, “warm toes all around”.
Disney + Subscription: I’m sure most of you have heard about the newest streaming service that is now available in South Africa, but did you know that Disney + isn’t just full of kids shows, it has some really great offerings for grown ups too! You’ll be able to watch all Marvel, Pixar, National Geographic and hit shows such as the entire Skywalker saga, The Kardashians, etc. This is definitely a gift the entire family will enjoy!
A ScrapSmith Custom Lightsaber: If you’re looking for the perfect gift for a Star Wars fan, then this is it. ScrapSmith specialises in custom lightsabers including neopixel blades and chassis using only the best parts. The also pre-program your blade (yes, lights and sounds, the whole shebang!) so that when you receive your saber, it’s ready to go!
A pair of Veldskoen: You don’t get more South African than this and I love how veldskoen have actually become pretty stylish. We bought a pair from Veldskoen for my dad a year or two ago and they really are great! The Veldskoen brand are known for their colourful soles and laces but there is so much more to know about this proudly South African company. The factory where all of the shoes are produced, Hopewell Footwear is a third generation, locally owned, family business who is a member of fairfactories.org. This means that as a company, Hopewell has to comply with very strict fair labour health and safety procedures. The hides that are used are locally sourced and the gifted shoemakers hand stitch each shoe with perfect attention to detail.
A Black Elephant Vinters wine hamper: Black Elephant Vinters is owned by Kevin, Raymond, and Jacque; each of whom bring their own skill set to the table… but the one thing all three of them have in common? They love wine… and being a little rebellious. They want to take the pretentiousness out of the wine industry and so have created a few ranges of wine that are full of character. The festival hamper is made up of Two Dogs, A Peacock And A Horse Sauvingnon Blanc (x2), The Fox And The Flamingo Rose (x2) and Three Men In A Tub Red Blend (x2); a wonderful mixed case and something a wine lover would be more than happy to receive.
Top Gun: Maverick at the IMAX: This is actually what we’re getting for my dad for Father’s Day (with an extra ticket for my mama) and I think it’s such a great idea! Top Gun is such a classic movie and apparently the new one is excellent and I’m sure most dads are dying to see it. And if you’re going to go to the movies, you might as well do it right and go to the IMAX where everything is bigger and better. A brief synopsis of the movie: “After more than 30 years of service as one of the Navy’s top aviators, Pete “Maverick” Mitchell is where he belongs, pushing the envelope as a courageous test pilot and dodging the advancement in rank that would ground him. Training a detachment of graduates for a special assignment, Maverick must confront the ghosts of his past and his deepest fears, culminating in a mission that demands the ultimate sacrifice from those who choose to fly it.”
Pajamas from Pick n Pay Clothing: Another typical but great Father’s Day gift. Personally I love getting jammies for Mother’s Day and I’m sure lots of dads feel the same way especially with the weather really getting chilly now. I love both this set and these pants from Pick n Pay Clothing, the flannel is 100% cotton and both sets are made in South Africa.
A Fudge Pack from The Counter: You haven’t tasted heaven until you’ve tasted fudge from The Counter… and because it’s basically impossible to choose just one flavour, a fudge pack is the way to go. In this hamper you’ll get all four of their fudge flavours: white chocolate (their best seller), Milo, Oreo and peanut butter. Delish! If you haven’t stumbled upon The Counter before, they are a a trio of Jozi foodies who not only make the most incredible confectioneries, but also cater events and have been in the biz for a solid ten years. On top of all of this they also offer meal boxes for delivery around Johannesburg, these include brunch boxes as well as fresh produce boxes.
Arrow Leather Goods Knife Roll Bag: Based in Stellenbosh, Arrow Leather Goods creates beautiful handmade leather products, just like this knife roll bag. It’s able to fit 4 large and 4 smaller knives and is perfect for the braai guy in your life. Because it’s made from bovine leather, each bag is unique and made with the greatest care and respect.
Banghoek Chilli Oil: If the dad in your life likes a good bite to his food, I’m sure he will love this chilli oil from Banghoek! Small batch and handmade, Bankhoek Chilli Oil came about when Ken Kinsey-Quick (a Stellenbosch local) couldn’t find the perfect chilli oil in South Africa like he had when he was living in Paris. After much taste testing, he discovered that infusing the chilli’s into canola oil gave a much better result than infusing them in olive oil… and so Banghoek Chilli Oil production began using the best quality canola oil and chilli’s. As a whole, Banghoek prefers human capital over automation and is passionate about hiring locals to help alleviate the unemployment crisis. They have also subscribed to an Emerging Farmers program to help uplift local growers.
Terbodore Bakery: One of my favourite spots in the Midlands (and did you know they also have a roastary in Franschoek?) now has some delicious bakery goodies for sale on their online store. We all know that Terbodore coffee is amazing so I can only imagine that their biscuits are just as good. All of the bakery goods are handmade at their Franschoek roastary and are the perfect bite sized addition to your cuppa Joe. Terbodore started in 2004 and from their very first roast, they committed to only using the best quality green coffee beans. Oh, if you’ve ever wondered what the great dane mascots name is, there are two! Jack in Franschoek and Mac in Curry’s Post and they are symbolic of everything that Terbodore stands for: heritage, courage, patience and dependability.
Just Family Things Pizza Braai: I mean who wouldn’t love this? Family pizza night just reached it’s peak with this pizza braai! Fitting perfectly on braais, Webers and fireplaces, this portable pizza braai is great for both home and holidays, plus it’s available in three different sizes to suit the size of your family. It’s locally made out of stainless steel and you also have the option to add a name, date or special message to it. Included with the pizza braai are baking tiles as well as stainless steel pizza peels.
QPhoto Everyday Photobook: I’ve chatted about these wonderful photobook quite a bit recently (you can have a look over here) but they really are wonderful and one filled with special memories would be perfect for Father’s Day. All you need are 21 photos and away you go. The layout is super simple (a photo per page) so you don’t need to worry about getting super creative other than placing the photos in the order that you want. You can also personalise the front cover of the book and choose between hard and soft cover. QPhoto has been in the business since 1984, that’s a long time and so it’s no wonder that they’re leaders in their industry! The Q in QPhoto stands for Quality and that’s what they’re all about; telling the best story ever, yours… in quality. Use my code MASCARAANDMIMOSAS for 15% off your order.
Motherland coffee: Okay, you all know that my go-to, ride or die coffee is from Motherland. Take away or sit down it’s just great and so of course some of their coffee beans had to make it onto my Father’s Day gift guide, I know Dan loves them too! Motherland prides themselves on only using specialty grade African single origin or blended coffee and they’re passionate about discovering new and unique flavours from different regions. Their coffee is sourced through direct trade relationships and they pride themselves in equipping and supporting local African farmers. Our favourite blend is the Single Origin Series from Rwanda. Here’s how Motherland describes it: “This coffee is from a cooperative that is female managed by Daphrose Uwimana, it is inspirational to see Daphrose in leadership of this cooperative and the exceptional coffees it continually produces. look for flavour notes of treacle sugar, molasses, orange marmalade and chocolate.” It’s a yes from me.
Lucky Little Custom Dad Hoodie: This is by far the best personalised Father’s Day hoodie that I’ve seen this year. Lucky Little is a well known local brand who is all about personalised clothing and they have something for everyone in your family, including your fur babies! They have a huge variety of colours and fonts to choose from which is great! For this particular hoodie, you choose what text goes on the chest (Dad, Papa, Pops, etc) as well as what text goes onto the wrist (they suggest children’s names and years of birth), as well as your colour text and font. It really is as personalised as you can get, and the price is right in my opinion. They also have a ton of other Dad gear so definitely check it out!
Pienaar & Son Dad Gin: I discovered this via an Instagram ad and think it’s such a great idea! Limited to only 800 bottles (it has been sold out since November 2021), you can add a personalised message to the back of your Pienaar & Son orient gin. This is the same gin that sparked international interest and acclaim for Pienaar & Son; it is aged in American oak for about 3 months, this gives it wonderful spicy flavours which is just perfect for gin drinking in this more chilly weather.
Baskiti Co Canvas Braai Tools Hanging Storage Bag: Baskiti is a brand that needs no introduction around here, their products are scattered all over our home and we love them! Their braai tools storage is yet another aesthetically pleasing storage solution and one that I think many men would love to have next to their braai both at home and on holiday. As always it’s locally made with love out of canvas with gorgeous leather accents and has space for tongs, blitz, lighters and whatever other braai must-haves the dad in your life needs. And while you’re at it, why not add one of the Baskiti J Hooks to your basket to attach your braai hanging storage to the wall, they really are gorgeous.
Journey Leather Wallet: Journey Leather is the company who make my card holder which I adore and their wallets look fantastic as well! This specific one doesn’t have a closure tab but there are options that include one, they are just ever so slightly more bulky. The wallet is made from african leather with luxurious lining on the inside. The best part though is that you can personalise it, my car holder has my initials on but you can really go wild with what you want embossed on the wallet. Journey Leather actually has so many wonderful gifting options so make sure to browse their full website, I’m sure you’ll add a few more things to your cart!
Phew, that really was quite a few options but I really love all of them and I hope you enjoyed this Fathers Day Gift Guide! But now tell me, which product do you think I bought for Dan…?
