Learning to love exercise plus a chance to win with Zando

Some people just seem to love exercise, I am just not one of them. I’ve never been one to wake up in the morning ready to hit gym, climb a mountain or go for a run. To be honest, there are a ton of other things that I would prefer to do… like snuggle in bed with a cup of coffee. However, a few months ago, I just knew that my body was in desperate need of some exercise, and so I signed up to a gym… again. It’s been about three months now (which is early days) but I am slowly learning to love exercise.

I honestly never thought that I would enjoy my hour three times a week at gym, and a lot of the time I don’t because it’s never ever easy but I have noticed some amazing changes both physically and emotionally since I’ve started working out. I know a lot of you out there are in the the same exercise-hating boat as me and so I wanted to share what has helped me enjoy exercise as well as some changes that I have noticed.

Getting a trainer totally changed the game for me. I used to go to gym and faff around on the treadmill, maybe spend a few minutes doing the circuit and then call it a day. I was bored and I wasn’t noticing any changes and so I took the financial plunge and started training with Mike who owns Deshi Basara Training Academy. Training with a professional and someone who is incredibly knowledgeable makes gym so much more interesting and I know that the exercises that Mike sets out for me are the ones that are going to help me smash my fitness goals. I find that it also helps me be consistent with going to gym three times a week, every week. My sessions with Mike are in my diary, I’ve made the financial commitment and if I cancel I mess up his schedule, these three factors push me to go to gym, even when I don’t want to)

I didn’t expect to feel so differently emotionally. It’s no secret that I have post natal depression, it’s something that I have battled for a little while and although I have been on medication that works so incredibly well, I haven’t felt as good, emotionally, as I do right now, now that I am exercising regularly. We all know that when we get moving our body releases the endorphins, the happy chemical and so after you’ve done your workout, you really do feel that exercise high (despite being so exhausted you want to pass out), I 100% this, but I didn’t think that exercise would have such a huge impact on my mental health as it does.

Comfy workout gear makes my life a ton easier. When I first started gymming again, I really didn’t have proper gym clothes, I really didn’t think that they were neccessary. However, after spending a few sessions pulling my leggings up and trying to keep my shirt from riding up, I bought a select few items. My two newest additions are these star cluster leggings from Custom Apparel that I bought from Zando with a voucher that they sent me (keep reading to the end to see how you can win your own voucher!). They are higher waisted than my other leggings which I love, it means that I don’t have to constantly pull them up. They are also made from 100% Echelon which means that they have slightly more stretch but they don’t look thin.

Another addition to my workout wardrobe is the Shock Absorber Power Workout sports bra that Choose Me Intimates sent me a few weeks ago. I’m not exactly a flat chested gal and so when I work out, I need a decent amount of support. Originally I was just using the normal t-bar unpadded sports bras but I found that they hurt and the support was pretty much zero. The Shock Absorber sports bra has adjustable straps and the light padding makes it incredibly comfortable.

Making time for exercise made me realise how much time I waste. For a long time I maintained that I just did not have time for exercise, I was way too busy with important commitments (like looking after my kid and working) to carve out an hour three times a week to go to gym. When I decided to get moving again, I sat down with my diary and highlighted every single free minute that I had during the day between working and looking after Aria. And what do you know, I found a full 90 minutes, enough time to go to gym and then come home and shower. It’s not at the most ideal time, it’s as soon as Dan gets home and the minute that I get back from gym (absolutely shattered), we start with Aria’s night time routine of dinner, bath and bed. But I found the time. I thought that I would have to really work a lot harder during the day to catch up on “all the important work” that I do during those 90 minutes. Turns out, I didn’t need to. All I had to do was to stop scrolling mindlessly through social media every ten minutes or quit procrastinating by watching another episode of series. Once I put my mind to it, I found that I actually had quite a bit of extra hours in the day if I just used my time wisely.

Zando has very kindly given me a R500 voucher to give away to one of you to use on some new sports gear. They really have a huge variety so you will be spoilt for choice! Entering is super simple, there are 4 different ways to enter, you can do one or all of them, it’s totally up to you!

Those pictures of skinny women with flawless skin always got to me. In my quest for perfection I knew that it was impossible to achieve especially if you add a husband, young children, a career and pets to the mix. A chocolate encrusted donut sounds more enticing that sweating it off at the gym. Which by the way is monotonous and simply requires dedication. I realized that if you incorporate exercise into your daily life, it will be more fun and you will reap the rewards. So out goes the donut loyalty card, out comes the smoothie machine and leashes for my Siberian huskies. A few months ago my skin was blotchy and I had a muffin top. I felt lethargic & depressed. I knew I had to get my groove back. So I incorporated my daily vigorous walk in my routine. And guess what! Not only are my dogs super happy but I am feeling comfortable in my skin. So yes, the million dollar question… how does exercise make me feel? It makes me feel AMAZING and ready to take on the world. It’s like a natural high and the feeling of simply loving the body that you are in is indescrible! Thank you so much for the “real” article above. I am not flat chested too and I got some serious sports bra tips from you… you and I have certainly got something in common… we persevere no matter what!

To be honest I did try the gym and it just wasn’t for me. I then discovered that I love running outdoors. I joined a running club and never looked back. I lost 14kg in three months. I do however have a huge problem with backfat to the point where I’m now getting really depressed because I can’t wear vests. I just don’t feel comfortable. I will now be forced to exercise as liposuction is too expensive.

This year was my year to start working on me. As a full time mom my children always came first and until recently I was at home with my daughter. (she just started school). I put alot of weight on while on the pill and just didnt exercise so i went up 10 kgs in a space of a few months. I joined a gym and have started working on my body. I find it hard as you work so hard but it takes a while to show. After a month of gym every morning i noticed that my tummy was flatter and i wasnt as hungry as i used to be.my body has slowly started changing and seeing that change even if it isnt massive changes pushes me on. My shirts fit better and slowly my pants are getting looser. I love making friends at gym. We laugh, moan and groan but we do it to make ourselves a better version of what we are. Its about getting fitter and healthier as apposed to being skinny and unhealthy

I was also super grumpy about exercise until about a year ago when I decided enough is enough. Now I do bootcamp 3 times a week and have run 5 10kms! I love seeing this progress and feeling so much stronger and fitter in myself. My bossy hasn’t visibly changed that much, but inside I am so much happier and confident!

I love the super energised feeling I have after exercise, and the mental benefits too, also I found during my cool down on the treadmill…. I can still watch series on my phone?. I find that sometimes I get so wrapped up in work I forget to take a break and when my gym alarm goes off, its like a breath of fresh air.

I used to be happy with my body for most of school and since the start of my first year at varsity, everything just went downhill when it came to fitness & exercise 🙁 I’m now in my final year and everyday I always tell myself “I’ll start tomorrow” or “I’ll start on Monday” but I just NEVER shave gotten around to it. But today I made a change, I am so unhappy with my body, I feel so uncomfortable in everything and I’m tired of feeling this way – so today I signed up for the gym, something that may not seem like a lot but considering I myself am paying for it and not my mom or dad, I will not waste a single cent and make sure I get the most out of my money and visit the gym as regularly as I can! I just want to feel healthy and active like I used to and get out of this slump of laziness and bad eating habits and hopefully gym can be the start of that to get my mind in the right place! I love your blog and your articles and this one especially as it REALLY motivated me and made me feel so happy about having joined the gym and wanting to feel good in my own skin! You are looking stunning and keep up the brilliant work! My next step is to purchase some fitness clothes cause like you said, you don’t want to be at gym and worrying more about fixing your clothes than focusing on the workout ! This voucher would be so great as it would be the start of my fitness clothing collection, as hopefully as time goes I will continue purchasing some stunning items that I can sweat my butt off in!

I am that person who doesn’t like the idea of exercise, and, depending on what I’m doing, I don’t always enjoy myself during exercise (running is HARD, but ballet is WONDERFUL… and also HARD), but afterwards I feel light (could be the lack of oxygen 😉 ), I’ve had my mind completely taken off of the rest of my life for a bit, and it helps manage my anxiety very well. So the anxiety management is probably my favourite part about exercise at this stage. Especially when it comes to running. Maybe when it gets easier (will it ever?) it’ll be about seeing me reach my goals :-).

Balancing my life between work, home and rest/recreation leads to a balance of mind and body. When I eat well and exercise often, I feel healthy and confident. Finding exercises I enjoy, eating healthy foods that make me feel good, spending time with people I love and most importantly staying positive and being happy! I also try to manage the stress in my Life. In our modern world we tend to let stress run wild I also attempt some relaxation techniques like meditation and Yoga apart from daily physical exercises I do. I think this certainly helps when it comes to relaxing my body and mind

    What I love about exercise?

I have never really been a gym person but at the beginning of the year I set my self a new years resolutions to get healthy and fit. But like most new years resolutions you put them off. However in June I decided that it was time and I signed up to a gym. At first I thought I would hate it but actually I love it. I love that I am getting more comfortable in my body but mostly that I am marking a change. That’s why this competition really stood out for me I would really love to get some workout gear to keep me motivated 🙂
