We so often talk about and recommend products for those with sensitive facial skin, but what about bodycare for sensitive skin?
Before we get into products, lets chat about what exactly constitutes and causes a sensitive skin? Simply put, the skin has a barrier layer that helps prevent the loss of hydration, but as important is the barrier layers protective function, keeping out anything that may cause harm or irritation to the skin. When the skin’s barrier layer is compromised, there is nothing to protect environmental factors from creeping in and as our result, our skin getting really angry about it. Typical symptoms include: excessive dryness, itching, prickling, burning, redness and scaling.
Those (including kiddies) that suffer from sensitivity on the body need to be really picky about what products that they use as so many can make the sensitivity worse. You’ve seen me chat about La Roche-Posay a few times (like here and here), and today I want to introduce you to their Lipikar range. La Roche-Posay Lipikar has been around for 25 years and their products have shown amazing results in clinical trials on both adults and children with sensitive skin. The range is well thought out but isn’t huge which I like (too many product choices overwhelm me!) and is easily available from Dermastore. Let’s get into the three products that I have shall we?
Lipikar Cleansing Oil: I am a huge fan of cleansing oils, I just find them so much more moisturising than your average shower gel. This cleansing oil from the Lipikar range is perfect to use on the most sensitive of skins, including babies as it has a neutral pH and is alcohol, paraben and soap free. The addition of the La Roche-Posay Thermal Spring Water helps to calm and soothe the skin while Niaciamide helps to repair the skin’s barrier and soothe the feeling of tightness. In terms of consistency, it isn’t a thick and heavy oil at all and when it is emulsified with water, it creates a lovely, soft micro-foam. This is definitely one of my top cleansing oils of all time, well worth the investment.
Lipikar Balm: Keeping a sensitive skin hydrated and moisturised is incredibly important but often body lotions and balms are fragranced which is an absolute no no for sensitivity! The Lipikar balm’s main ingredient is Aqua Posae Filiformis (patented by La Roche-Posay) that not only stabalises the microbiome’s stability but also helps to restore and build up the skins barrier layer. Like cleansing oil, the balm also contains niaciamide making this the perfect product for allergy prone and sensitive skin. The initial consistency is quite thick but as you massage it into your skin it spreads really well and absorbs brilliantly. I was so chuffed that it didn’t feel at all sticky or thick once I had applied it, it also works like a bomb on Aria’s little bod.
Lipikar Cleansing Cream-Gel: If you aren’t a cleaning oil fan, then this cream-gel may be up your ally. Like the cleansing oil, the cream-gel has a neutral pH and is alcohol, paraben and soap free. One thing to keep in mind is that this is not your typical shower gel, so don’t expect a super foamy product. Although it does foam up slightly more than the cleansing gel, it does still have a creamy consistency to it. Dan really enjoyed using this every morning in the shower, especially in the winter when his skin gets really dehydrated.
Although the Lipikar range is priced slightly higher than what you would normally pay for a body wash and moisturiser, it is money well spent if you have sensitive skin or if you feel like your skin could use an extra dose of hydration. If you want to know more about the other products in the Lipikar range, just hop onto the La Roche-Posay website.
