Okay, let’s just ignore the fact that it’s the beginning of February 2020… but I finally got the chance to whittle down all of my beauty products down to a key few that were the best of beauty 2019. These are the products that I reached for regularly, that I would grab if my house caught on fire and the ones that I would be devastated if they were discontinued.
As always, I’ve linked as many of the products to online stores to make your life easier. Let’s dive straight in!
Urban Decay Naked Heat palette: Literally, if this palette ever gets discontinued, I will shed actual tears. It has every shade that I need in it, from neutral browns, to shimmery coppers and deep magenta. It is beautifully pigmented and it stays put for an absolute age. If you’re on the fence about investing in one, I’m here to tell you that it’s worth it! I wrote a full blog post on it over here where I show swatches as well as three looks.
Urban Decay All Nighter setting spray: I’ve been using this since Urban Decay landed in South Africa a few years ago and I can attest to the fact that it locks your make up in place like no other! I’ve even gone swimming and when I emerged from the water, Baywatch style of course, my make up was still perfect. I love that I can go from 7am til 9pm without worrying that I need to touch up my make up, because honestly who has the time? There are also varients of the All Nighter, for anti pollution, oily skin and dehydrated skin.
Real Techniques buffing brush: This is my go to brush to get my foundation to look fab. It blends the product out seamlessly and quickly too which is an absolute win! I’ve actually got a few in my brush collection because if one needs to get washed, I’ve got another to use – I can’t go without it!
MAC 286 duo fibre tapered brush: Looking for the perfect eyeshadow brush for in the crease? This is it! I use this brush from MAC every single day that I wear eyeshadow. It blends shadow into the crease and outer corner of the eye beautifully. If there’s one eyeshadow brush that you need, it’s this one.
Maybelline Tattoo Brow waterproof gel: Being a blondie means that my brows are super light, which doesn’t give much frame to my eyes. Generally I tint my brows at home but sometimes I just don’t get around to it and that’s where this brow gel from Maybelline really helps out. I have the shade Deep Brown and it’s gives my brows the perfect shade until I wash my face that evening. Admittedly it does take some getting used to but once you get the hang of working with it, you’ll love it. I brush my brows through with a spooly first, then I wipe off the excess product off the want and then quite lightly stroke the brush through my brows to deposit the pigment. It dries almost instantly and keeps your brown in place, and in the perfect shade all day.
Avon Glow bronzing pearls: I love this product, it’s so soft yet wonderfully effective. It’s great for summer for days at the beach or pool and perfect for winter to add a little colour to your complexion. I like to use a big powder brush and I just go to town, that’s the beauty of this product, because it’s so light, you can’t mess it up. Natural looking, sun kissed skin anyone?
L’Oréal Paris Botanicals Rose and Geranium Radiance Remedy range: It takes a lot for me to notice a difference in my hair when using a new shampoo and conditioner, but after just a few washes using this new-ish range from L’Oréal I could tell that this combo was going to be an absolute winner. My hair felt nourished, hydrated and so silky smooth. My hair also didn’t seem to be as frizzy but it definitley wasn’t weighed down or more oily. I also love that this range is really affordable so you can go on and treat yourself without feeling guilty, hooray!
Avène Thermal Spring Water: Guys, if you haven’t used this product then you are seriously missing out. I make sure that I always have one on hand and a back up in case I run out. It is brilliant as a hydrating mist (under or over your moisturiser), works wonders on sun that has spent a bit too much time in the sun, soothes sensitive skin in a cinch, helps to heal nappy rash and the list goes on. Bonus points because it’s affordable, even more bonus points because Avène products are often on 3 for 2 at Clicks!
Living That Oil Life Sleepy Time roller: Honestly this is one of the best products I used this year. I wouldn’t say that I suffer from insomnia but I often battle to fall asleep (my mind goes a million miles an hour as soon as I lie down) and I sleep very lightly. I use my roller every night and I cannot tell you the difference that it makes; I fall asleep within minutes and into a proper deep sleep. I don’t feel any weird side effects like some people do when taking a sleeping pill and if I forget to use it at night, I can still fall asleep (although not as quickly) and so I don’t feel like I am completely dependent on it, it just gives me a better quality sleep. Ash, who owns Living That Oil Life is incredibly knowledgeable and will be able to answer any questions or address any concerns you may have.
LUSH Sleepy shower gel: While we’re on the subject of getting more Zs, the LUSH Sleepy shower gel is definitely something that you need if you’re struggling a bit. I don’t usually love the smell of lavender but combined with sweet tonka it’s absolutely addictive. I would classify this more as a shower creme than a gel but don’t worry, it doesn’t leave a greasy layer and once I’ve used it, my skin feels incredibly nourised and smells divine. There is also a soap bar and a body lotion if you fall for it hard like I have.
Bioderma Sensibo micellar water: This is, without a doubt, the best eye make up remover. It doesn’t sting or burn but it is still incredibly effective. And best of all, you can often score it on 3 for 2 at Clicks!
Caribbean Tan instant tan: Look, I’m a pale gal and even though I’ve embraced it somewhat, I still feel better when I am tanned. Having the complexion of a ghost means that I have tried many, many different self tans out there, but I think that this is my favourite one ever. The fact that it’s instant (with enough time to blend) makes the application so easy and streaking a thing of the past. I use shade B but there is a lighter and a darker shade, and you can get an aerosol or spritzer bottle. I do use my glove, which you can also pick up at Clicks.
And that’s a wrap on my best of beauty 2019! I’ve already got some faves for 2020 so you can expect to see some of those to start popping up on my social platforms and right here on the blog. What were some of your beauty faves from last year?
