best of 2015 : make-up

Hello again, have you been enjoying these Best of 2015 posts? You can read the skincare one here and the hair and body one here. Today is the final one and I like to think I saved the best for last – make-up!

Two mascaras that really stood out to me this year were the Catrice Ultimate Lash Multimizer and the Clinique High Impact. Both of them coat your lashes in a soot black pigment without clumping. I find the Clinique mascara is ever so slightly more lengthening but the Catrice one is just as good and for a third of the price, I literally can’t fault it. I’ve said it before and I will say it again : I want an all-in-one mascara and these two both deliver in pigment, lengthening, volume and zero clumping.

Still on the topic of eyes, I have been reaching for two particular eye shadows this year and they are both affordable! The first one is the newly launched Essence Merry Berry collection in the shade 01 The Perfect Dress. This is a lovely taupe colour with a very subtle shimmer. I like to sweep this all over the lid for a quick 5 minute face look or use it as a base colour if I decide to add a bit more oomph for a more put together look. The second eyeshadow is the Love in Paris 01 A La Mode palette from NYX.  This 9 shadow beauty is really all you need to create a sexy smokey eye. There are some lovely browns and the greys are a welcome addition. I also really like the fact that there are both matt and shimmer colours as well as a lighter colour to highlight under the brow bone and the inner corners.

Last item for eyes is the Alila Eyeliner Pencil in the shade Mocha Brown. I’ve never been a huge fan of pencil liners – they always seem to transfer and smudge leaving me looking like a panda and so I tried this eyeliner out with very low expectations. Wowee did it suprise me! Zero, and I mean no smudging at all, it also lasts the entire day. The pencil itself is also really soft and so application is a breeze and I’m not too scared of poking my eye out. Nice to know, Alila pencils are hypoallergenic and lead free.

A good foundation is everything and I have really been enjoying one in particular this year, I’m sure you can guess which one, I’ve mentioned it countless times. It’s the Rimmel Match Perfection, and it really is perfection! It blends like a dream, is completely buildable, gives decent coverage but still feels lightweight. Oh, and it’s easy on the pocket – score!

This year I really got onto the BB cream band wagon – its a great alternative to foundation if you’re just popping out to Woolies to do some grocery shopping or are just having a bit of a lazy make-up day. One of the best I’ve tried this year is the LA Girl Pro BB Cream. I love that this is extremely lightweight but still evens out my skin tone and gives a very light coverage. It doesn’t cover every single blemish but it just makes me look just that tiny bit more attractive. A few months ago I discovered the Kiehls Actively Correcting  & Beautifying BB Cream. This is a bit thicker in consistency and so gives slightly more coverage. I’m not a massive fan of the scent but I can overlook that because it does such a great job. An added bonus is the SPF 50 (perfect for the summer holidays!) and the vitamin C which helps to correct skin irregularities and provide hydration.

The next two items are what I consider make-up essentials this summer. First off is a highlighter, my favourite this year has to be the Catrice Kaviar Gauche Blurring Powder Pearls. They create a beautifully subtle luminocity on the skin that just screams healthy! Unfortunately this collection has been discontinued but if you’re on the market for a good highlighter, try the new Essence Merry Berry I Love My Golden Pumps (the star embossing is so cute) or the absolute classic Soft and Gentle from MAC. The second item that will be your saving grace this summer is the Beauty Fix Radiant Make-Up Finish. Not only is this a setting spray so that your make-up won’t melt off but it is also an amazing hydration mist, perfect to prevent your skin from getting parched in this heat. I absolutely adore the rose fragrance!

A pretty pout really finishes off any look and these two lippies were firm favourites this year. MAC Dreaminess is a soft pink – not too Barbie and not too sheer. It’s the perfect balance between the two and gives a beautiful pop of colour, my go to in the warmer months. During Autumn and Winter, my favourite lip colour was Essence Come Naturally. The mauve makes it slightly more vampy while still being a nude colour perfect for everyday wear.

Last but most definitely not least are two make up brushes that I absolutely could not live without. The Real Techniques Buffing Brush literally changed my (make-up) life. Using this makes my foundation look completely natural, smooth and 100% blended. It literally is a miracle worker, if you don’t have one, do yourself a favour and get one! The second brush is the Cala 319 Medium Shadow. This is a larger eyeshadow brush and I find it perfect for applying product over my entire lid or highlighting under the brow bone. Cala brushes are available in natural or synthetic fibres so if you prefer to purchase cruelty free items, Cala has you sorted!

And that’s a wrap on Best of 2015! Did you find it helpful? Which was your favourite post? Here’s to a bigger and even better 2016!
