A weeks worth of lunchbox ideas

When Aria started school a week or so ago, I was so excited to pack her little schoolbag! But the one thing I wasn’t too clued up on was what to pack for her to eat, and so off I went to my BFF, Pinterest and to get inspired. I’m sure I’m not the only one who battles to come up with ideas and so today, I’m sharing some lunchbox ideas with you, the ones that were hits with Aria, and hopefully your kiddies will love them just as much!

I try to make sure that Aria always has a source of protein as well as a fruit and a relatively healthy carb and of course some water. In terms of her lunchbox, I just use a normal plastic container similar to this one and then use silicone cupcake moulds to hold smaller items.

Monday: Grapes cut longways, some droewors and a peanut butter sandwich cut into four.

It’s really important that when you cut your grapes, you cut them longways as this will help prevent your little one from choking.

Tuesday: Fruit roll up cut into smaller pieces, oven baked mini biscuits (the ones pictured here are these ones from Woolies) and some ham and cheese sandwich sushi.

To make the sandwich sushi simply cut off the crusts of a slice of bread and roll flat with either a rolling pin or a glass. Place a slice of ham and some thinly sliced cheese on the bread, and then roll it up, like you would sushi. Slice it up into appropriate sized pieces for your child and then pop into their lunch box.

Wednesday: Popcorn, egg mayonnaise heart sandwiches (simply use a cookie cutter of your choice to make the shapes) and some apple pieces.

To prevent the apple pieces going brown, pop them in a bowl with one cup of water and one teaspoon of salt. Let them soak for 10 minutes and then rinse. I promise that you don’t taste any salt afterwards!

Thursday: Broken up granola bar, cheese sticks and banana and peanut butter pouches.

These banana and peanut butter pouches are definitely one of Aria’s favourites and they are pretty simple to make. Mash up half a banana in a bowl (it helps if the banana is slightly over ripe), add one or two teaspoons of peanut butter and mix it all together. Cut your bread into the size that you want and then add some of the banana mixture to the center of your slice of bread. Place the other slice on top, and then to seal it properly, press down on the edges with a fork.

Friday: dried peach pieces, mini rice cakes with yogurt (these ones from Woolies), small yogurt (we love the Oh My Goodness range from Checkers, awesome meals for great prices) and two star shaped marmite sandwiches.

Don’t forget to pop a spoon into the lunch box!

I hope that this has helped to inspire you and that packing the kids lunch isn’t as mundane as it usually is. If you have any great lunchbox ideas, please leave them in the comment below so that we can all try them out!

  4. Thank you for this post! It’s back to school for us and I’m dreading those lunchboxes (times 2, everyday!). Cold pasta salad also works well I found, with a small dollop of mayo, cherry tomatoes and tuna.
